2018 Point-in-Time Count

Each year, on a single night in January, a census of those experiencing homelessness is conducted across the country. The Annual Point-In-Time Count is mandated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the resulting data is crucial to secure the funding needed to house and help maintain stable housing for those we serve.

Area churches, synagogues host homeless men from New Haven’s Columbus House

Ten homeless men had the chance recently to break away from the crowd of 100 at Columbus House homeless shelter and spend a week sleeping at Orange Congregational Church, where they ate home-cooked meals and had access to games, TV and snacks.

A version of the same story appears in the Torah, the Bible and the Qur’an: Strangers appear at Abraham’s tent, and he welcomes them…In the spirit of that story, New Haven-area churches and synagogues have been raising a metaphorical tent of their own every winter for nine years. Welcoming homeless strangers in need of that same hospitality, Abraham’s Tent is administered by Columbus House, a local organization that runs a 101-bed shelter on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard and aims for “understanding and working toward overcoming the problems which cause people to become homeless,” its website says.

Veteran Apartment Project In Middletown Gets Final Approvals

The state has relinquished a piece of property on the Connecticut Valley Hospital campus Wednesday, making way for 32 units of supportive housing for veterans in Middletown. The New Haven-based Columbus House plans to renovate the former Mary Shepherd Home, originally a dormitory for nurses built in 1924, into apartments with on-site case-management services for veterans.
