Extreme Weather Protocols

  • Severe Cold Activation: Protocols are typically triggered when temperatures or wind chills fall to single digits or below.
  • Warming Centers: Columbus House operates seasonal and emergency warming centers (such as the Keefe Community Center in Hamden). These provide a safe, indoor space away from the elements.
  • No-Freeze Policy: Columbus House and city partners ensure that no one is turned away from services due to a lack of shelter space.

For direct access to immediate shelter, services, and locations, the public is urged to use the 211 Connecticut directory or call 2-1-1. For local site-specific services in the Greater New Haven and Hamden regions, you can check the City of New Haven Shelters & Winter Warming Centers or the Town of Hamden Warming Center portals for updates on protocol activations.
